GG MCP for VSCode
GG MCP for VSCode is an editor extension that starts a local MCP server in VS Code and in VS Code-based editors such as Cursor and Windsurf, so that MCP-capable AI assistants can work directly on the project you have open. Assistants can read, search and edit files, run commands in the terminal or in the background, check Git status, changes and history, and commit, pull and switch branches; they can also set breakpoints, run debug configurations and find symbols and references. The server runs only on your machine, the status bar shows whether it is running, and files changed by the AI are refreshed in the editor automatically.
The problem it solves
To take a real part in development, an AI assistant needs to read the project's code, run commands and see its version history. GG MCP for VSCode makes these editor capabilities available to AI assistants through the MCP protocol. The assistant works directly in the editor and project the developer is using, and its changes show up in the editor right away, with no copying code back and forth.
Main features
Assistants can read, search, create and edit project files and work with the open editor; run commands in the integrated terminal or in the background; check Git status, diffs and history, commit, pull, and create and switch branches; set breakpoints and run debug configurations; list symbols, find references, and rename symbols or extract code where the language server supports it. Each capability is described below.
How it works
The extension starts with the editor and the server runs only on your machine. Its port is chosen automatically between 9960 and 9990 and shown in the status bar; clicking the status bar shows the server status or restarts it. Claude Desktop users connect through MCPxHub, which finds this port automatically, and clients that can connect to a local MCP server over HTTP can connect directly.
Who it is for
Developers working in VS Code-family editors who want Claude Desktop or another MCP client to take part directly in their project work.
What you need
- VS Code 1.93 or later, or a VS Code-based editor such as Cursor or Windsurf.
- The extension, installed from the VS Code Marketplace or Open VSX.
- An MCP-capable AI client. With Claude Desktop, MCPxHub is needed as well.
Features
Debugging and code navigation
Set and list breakpoints and run debug configurations from launch.json; list the symbols in a file, find references, and rename symbols or extract code where the language server supports it.
Runs only on your machine
The server listens only on your own machine, on a port chosen automatically between 9960 and 9990, and moves to another port if that one is taken.
Status and automatic refresh
The status bar shows whether the server is starting, running (with its port), stopped or has failed; clicking it shows the status or restarts the server. Files changed by the AI are refreshed in the editor automatically.
Files, terminal and Git
Read, search, create and edit files; run commands in the integrated terminal, or in the background and get the output back; check Git status, diffs and history, commit, pull, and create and switch branches.
Starts with the editor
The server runs automatically once the editor has started, and earlier when the open project contains a package.json file or a .git folder. It works on the project you have open, with nothing else to start.
